On December 17, as usual for these dates, the 26th edition of the TV3 and Catalunya Radio Marathon will be held, this year dedicated to infectious diseases.
As they tell us on the Marathon page:
“Infectious diseases are responsible for one in three deaths in the world. They happen here and now and can affect us all“, explained the doctor Jordi Carratalà , head of the Infectious Diseases Service at Bellvitge Hospital, who presented data on the incidence and mortality of the set of diseases that La Marató will treat. Among the most serious situations is sepsis, a widespread infection that causes ten daily deaths in Catalonia and serious sequelae in those who survive. Regarding the treatments, Carratalà explained that “antibiotic resistance involves complications in treatment, a fact that the WHO describes as the most serious current health problem in the world “The situation may worsen to the point that.”by 2050 there could be up to ten million deaths a year from infections “a figure that would surpass cancer deaths. In this scenario, research into infectious diseases is a”priority worldwide “and it must focus on three areas, according to Carratalà:”create more efficient preventive measures, develop rapid diagnostic tests and new antibiotics “.
The Marathon has been achieving a very important social mobilization and fundraising for research for years because it adopts various formulas to involve thousands of people.
