On December 18, as usual for these dates, the 25th edition of the TV3 and Catalunya Radio Marathon will be held, this year dedicated to stroke and spinal cord injuries.
As they tell us on the Marathon page:
Stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by a stroke. In Catalonia, it is the leading cause of death in women and the third in men. Each year, there are more than 13,000 cases, 1,300 of which in patients younger than 55 years. Despite surviving a stroke, 45% of those affected will have a motor, sensory, cognitive, speech or comprehension disability with serious repercussions on quality of life. In Catalonia alone, 900 children have a disability caused by a stroke.
In the world, every year, stroke affects about 17 million people and causes the death of 6 million. It is the leading cause of disability and, according to experts, will become the epidemic of the future, as it will have one in six people.
The 2016 Marathon will also treat spinal cord and brain injuries caused by trauma. Traumatic brain injuries affect areas of the brain responsible for movement, sensations and perceptions, emotions and behavior, as well as attention, memory, language and intelligence. On the other hand, spinal cord injuries can cause paralysis of voluntary mobility and lack of sensitivity below the affected area, as well as other disorders and diseases derived from this state. Depending on whether the injury is complete or partial, and depending on the level at which it occurs, the consequences will be more or less severe. In recent years, experts have noticed a change in the cause of these injuries of traumatic origin: those caused by traffic accidents have decreased and those caused by domestic falls in older people have increased.
The Marathon has been achieving a very important social mobilization and fundraising for research for years because it adopts various formulas to involve thousands of people.
